Abstract: The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 was awarded jointly to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shoji Nakamura “for the invention of efficient blue light emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources”. We shall describe the major milestones in this research, which led to a revolution in lightening technology, blue and ultraviolet semiconductor lasers and optical storage.
