Abstract: Due to the extended symmetries T-duality and U-duality, string theory admits backgrounds that are locally smooth but globally cannot be described by a geometric manifold. I will describe how they arise, their description in higher and lower-dimensional supergravity, and the charges that support them.
Reminder: Tea and cookies will be in the seminar room before the seminar.
