First Direct Detections of Gravitational Waves
Abstract: During their first observation run the Advanced LIGO gravitational-wave detectors recorded signatures of mergers of binary black hole systems. These events mark the beginning of gravitational-wave astrophysics, enabling a new approach to studying various astrophysical phenomena. I will describe the LIGO detectors and the events they recorded, and I will discuss the implications of these observations as well as our expectations for future observations.
